2-day Mountain Nyiragongo Volcano hike Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Airport Pick up –Transfer to Kampala
Your adventure begins in Goma, the capital of North Kivu, after breakfast. Meet your professional driver and guide who will transfer you to the Kibati Ranger Post — the starting point of your Nyiragongo ascent. Here, you’ll receive a safety briefing and meet the experienced park rangers and porters who will accompany you on the trek.
The hike to the summit takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on your pace and weather conditions. As you climb, the trail winds through dense tropical rainforest alive with birds, small mammals, and bursts of wildflowers. The higher you go, the terrain transforms into volcanic rock and lava fields, opening up to panoramic views of the Virunga range and the green expanse below.
Reaching the summit is an experience beyond words. Before you lies the mighty Nyiragongo crater — a vast cauldron of churning, glowing magma that paints the clouds above in shades of orange and red. The spectacle is both terrifying and beautiful, a raw display of nature’s untamed power. At the top, settle into your summit camp, where simple yet comfortable tented cabins await. As night falls, enjoy a warm meal and spend the evening mesmerized by the glow of the lava lake, its rhythmic movement lighting up the mountain like a heartbeat of fire.
