The beautiful safari park occupies an area of about of about 33 square km, Mgahinga national park is Uganda’s smallest park part of the 8 Virunga ranges that are shared by Uganda, Rwanda & Congo. It’s contiguous with Volcanoes national Park in Rwanda & Virunga national park in DR-Congo that has been established to conserve the endangered mountain gorillas. Mgahinga was first declared as a game sanctuary back in 1930 by the British emperors and later gazetted as a national park in 1991 protecting the precious life of the rare and endangered Mountain gorilla species.
Wildlife in Mgahinga
The Park is home to the Nyakagezi group which is a trans-boundary gorilla family that crosses Uganda Rwanda borders occasionally making tracking gorillas in Mgahinga a little harder and unpredictable than in Bwindi forest. The Nyakagezi group comprises of 10 individuals headed by a mature silverback gorilla that protects this family from any danger, makes decision of where to feed from among other responsibilities.
There are about 76 mammal species and up to 184 bird species recorded and apart from gorillas, you will get chance to encounter the bamboo forest dwelling Golden Monkeys community (over 50 individuals have been recorded here), bush pigs, buffaloes, elephant, bushbucks, side striped jackals, giant forest hog and a variety of birds including whydah, speckled mouse bird, stone chat, Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori nightjar, paradise fly-catcher, Rwenzori Batis, double-colored sunbird among others.

How to Get to Mgahinga National Park
The park can be accessed both on road or air transport, Mgahinga is situated is 510 km from Kampala city passing via Kabale & Kisoro road. With a 4×4 safari vehicle, the journey is 9-10 hours drive from Kampala to the park navigating through the eye catching landscapes in south western region of Uganda.
