Gaddafi Mosque, Uganda National Mosque

Also known as the National Mosque Of Uganda, Gaddafi Mosque is ranked as the biggest in East Africa . it is located approximately 2 kilometers from the Centre of the Old Kampala hill which is one of the renown sevens of Kampala – the capital city of Uganda. The Construction of Gaddafi Mosque began in the 1972 and this the time when the Muslim Supreme Council was established by the Uganda’s state and named the Old Kampala national Mosque.

Unfortunately, in the 1976 the construction of the Mosque stopped not until 2001 when Sheik Mufti Shaban Ramadhan Mubuye forwarded his request the former president of Libya- Colonel Muammar Gaddafi when he made his trip to Uganda to assist in the construct of the mosque and luckily enough the request was accepted. Therefore the construction commenced and the building was completed in 2006. In June 2007 the mosque was opened and renamed it as Gaddafi National Mosque in honor of his great contribution towards the construction endeavor.

The Gaddafi Mosque can accommodate over 15000 worshipers, the gallery can take up about 1,100 and the terrace about 3,500  worshipers. Colonel Muammer Gaddafi had commissioned the mosque in form of a gift to Uganda with an intention to benefit the Moslem population.  It is important to note Uganda has numerous mosques but the Gaddafi mosque is the biggest in East Africa as well as in the sub Saharan Africa. The Gaddafi Mosque features a university, hospital, Radio Station, Library plus a Conference hall.

In rating to other Uganda mosques, the Gaddafi Mosque is a skyscraper and it is home to the headquarters of the Supreme council on the ground floor which is the national religious advocacy organization for all Muslims in Uganda. The upper floor is where the Muslim congregation seats during time for prayers.
