Also referred to the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is a wonderful country blessed with amazing natural beauty that ranges from a diversity of wildlife found in the 10 national parks situated in different parts of the Country to the mesmerizing landscape. The Wildlife national parks in Uganda is under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)- a governmental body responsible for all national parks in Uganda. UWA is responsible for regulating all the Wildlife conservation in Uganda. Other roles include, sets and collecting park entry fees, promoting public participation in Wildlife conservation.

Location Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national park- where is Bwindi forest located?

Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park is situated in the south western region of Uganda and it is a famous destination for the great gorilla trekking experience in World. It is one of the small national parks in Uganda but extremely rewarding and it covers an area of about 321 square kilometers that is rich in extraordinary biodiversity. The park is located on the edges of the great rift valleys region adjacent Buhoma and Nkuringo towns. It stands on altitude of 1,160m-2,607m above sea level and the park can be accessed by road using different routes. 

The routes that can lead you the park include; Kampala-Ntungamo-Rukungiri-Kihihi-Buhoma, Kampala-Kabale-Kanungu-Buhoma, Kampala-Kabale-Nkuringo. Tourists coming from Queen Elizabeth national park can access the park through the Ishasha sector where you get chance to sight the tree climbing lions, then connect Kihihi and finally enter the park. it is important to note that duration of the park will depend on which route you chosen to use and the sector you are interested in trekking. But generally, from Kampala directly to the park, it takes you 9 to 20 hours’ drive including the stopover points along the way.

Location of Mgahinga gorilla national park- Where is Mgahinga gorilla national park

Mgahinga gorilla national park is situated in Kisoro district in the south western region of the Uganda. Also, one of the smallest national parks that occupies an area of about 33.7 square kilometers. The park is popular home to the famous endangered mountain gorillas as well as the endangered Golden monkeys. Mgahinga national parks is one of the portions of the Virunga Massif conservation area co-existing together with other national parks such as; Virunga national park of the DR-Congo, Volcanoes national park in Rwanda.

Mgahinga gorilla national park stands on an elevation of about 2,227 meters to 4127 meters and it is bordered by DR-Congo as well as Rwanda. it can be accessed by either road or air transport. From Kampala by road, it is about 11 hours drive covering a distance of 540 kilometers. Mgahinga national park can accessed from Kigali-Rwanda by road and it takes you about 5 hours drive to reach the park headquarters.

Location of Murchison Falls national park- where is Murchison falls National park found?

Murchison falls national park is situated in the north western region of Uganda and it is the largest and oldest national park. It occupies an area of about 3,893 square kilometers. It sits on an altitude of 615 to 1,187 meters above sea level along the northern region of the great Albertine rift valley. It covers the districts of Masindi, Bulisa, Kiryandongo and Nwoya. Although Masindi is main recognized district.

The park can be accessed by either road or air transport, from Kampala by road, it takes you approximately 5-6 hours’ drive covering a distance of about 305 kilometers. When you opt to fly to park from Kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe international Airstrip and you land in the various bush airstrips such as; Chobe airstrip, Pakuba airstrip,

Also, the second largest protected area, Queen Elizabeth national park was named after the Queen of England and it covers an area of 1,978 square Kilometers. It stretches it borders to over 7 districts of Uganda which include, Kasese, Rukungiri, Kamwenge plus Rubirizi district. The main district is Kasese district which is the recognized location. The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth that is famous home to the tree climbing lions extends adjacent to the DR-Congo.

Queen Elizabeth national park can be accessed through different routes is Kampala such as; Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara-Kasese route that takes you about 6-7 hours drive covering a distance of about 370 kilometers and the Kampala-Mityana-Fort Portal-Kasese routes that takes about 7 hours’ drive covering a distance 380 kilometers.

Location of Lake Mburo National park- where is Lake Mburo national park

Lake Mburo national park is the smallest savannah national park in Uganda home to unique Wildlife that offers you a unique experience in a Uganda safari. The park is located in western region of Uganda in Mbarara district and it is bordered Isingiro district and Kiruhura district. It occupies an area of about 260 square kilometers and stands on an Elevation of about 1220 meters to 1,828 meters above sea level. Lake Mburo national park is the only wildlife that is close to Kampala capital city of Uganda. From Kampala to the park by road, it takes you about 4-5 hours drive including the stopover points.

Location of Mount Elgon National park – where is Mount Elgon national park situated

Mount Elgon National park is found on the border of Kenya and Uganda in the Eastern region of Uganda in the and of Sebei and Bagishu regions. The park shares its boundaries with the districts of Bududa, Sironko, Mbale, Bulambuli, Kapchorwa, Kween, Bukwo district. The main closest town to the park is Mbale Town. The park can be accessed road and from Kampala to Mount Elgon national park, it is about 235 kilometers and here you drive through Jinja, Mbale town and finally enter the park.

Location of Kibale forest National park – where is Kibale forest national park

Kibale national park is a popular home to the biggest number of chimpanzees in East Africa. The park is located in Kabarole district in the western region of Uganda and it is dominated by tropical rainforests. It stands on an Elevation of about 1,100 meters to 1600 meters above sea level. Kibale forest national park covers an area of 766 square kilometers and it holds a population of 1500 chimpanzees.  The park borders Kasese in the south, Fort Portal in the north as well as Kamwenge in the East. Kibale forest national park is near to Semuliki National park and Queen Elizabeth national park.

Kibale forest national park can be accessed using various routes but shortest route the park is through Fort portal. From Kampala by road to the Park, it is takes you about 6 hours drive covering a distance of 314 kilometers plus a connection distance of 26 Kilometers. If you go through Masaka route, it takes you approximately 8 hours covering a distance of about 400 kilometers and this is the longest route from Kampala.

Location Kidepo valley national park – Where is Kidepo Valley National park located?

Kidepo valley national park is very far away from Kampala found in the deep remote areas of Uganda. The park is situated in the north eastern region of Uganda bordering Kenya and South Sudan. The park is dominated by a rugged, semi-arid valleys found in Karamoja part with in the districts of Kaabong. The park occupies an area of about 1,442 square Kilometers and it stands of an elevation of about 914 meters to 2,750 meters above sea level. Kidepo valley national park is located in the northwest of Moroto which is the main town with in the sub region. From Moroto town, the park is situated 220 kilometers by road.

A transfer from Kampala capital city of Uganda to Kidepo valley national park take you about 11 hours 520 kilometers while in a 4×4 safari Vehicle. Alternatively, tourists can opt to fly to the park and upon arrival you land in Apoka airstrip or Kidepo airstrip.

Location of Rwenzori Mountains national park- where is Rwenzori Mountains national park found?

Also referred to as the Mountains of the moon, Rwenzori Mountains is blessed with a diversity of Wildlife and it is situated in the western region of Uganda. It covers the districts of Kabarole, Kasese, Bundibugyo and Ntoroko. Mountain Rwenzori ranges

Stands as a clear physical boundary between DR-Congo and Uganda. The park can be accessed by both road or air transport and from Kampala by road, you drive through Fort Portal covering a distance of about 375 kilometers. Alternatively, you can go through Mbarara and kasese, covering a distance of about 450 kilometers per hour. For travelers that would like to fly to the park, a chartered flight from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip lands you in Kasese Airstrip and then enjoy a short transfer drive to the park by road.
