are advised to hire two potters to lift them to and from the gorilla trek experience and to be
helped in case of an emergency.

Opting for shorter treks

Best time to visit the park.

Volcanoes National Park is open and accessible throughout the year. However, most travelers
prefer coming to the park in the dry season because roads are passable. This lies in the months of
June- September and December- February. Wet months of March and October-–November have
heavy rains that make the roads muddy and slippery but favorable for photographers and those
interested in chimpanzee trekking.

Accessibility to Volcanoes National Park

The park can be accessed by a 1- 2 hour drive from Kigali city by road to Kinigi. From other
parks, Volcanoes is 4-5 hours from Nyungwe and 5 hours’ drive from Akagera.
From Uganda at Cyanika border in Kisoro, it takes only 30 minutes to reach the park, 2.5 hours
from Bwindi, and 10 hours’ drive from Entebbe International Airport via Mbarara- Kisoro to
reach the border.

Accommodation options.

Accommodation facilities within the park and outside range from Upmarket, midrange to budget.
Choosing a facility would depend on one’s desire and finances. Among the best include Bisate
Lodge, Virunga Lodge, Kwitonda Lodge, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Da Vinci Lodge, Kinigi
