Katogo

It is a mixture of various foods prepared together. It normally goes well with avocado or fresh salads. The moment you get this special meal for your morning treat it delightfully keeps you satisfied until the afternoon when you receive your lunch.

This is one of the greatest and oldest meals in uganda which is said to have developed by king Mwanga personal chef in the late 19th century in Buganda kingdom. All thanks to that chef who managed to come up with such a work of art that has became one of Buganda and Uganda finest. It has given pleasure to lots of people around the world who come over with natives themselves.

Luwombo is prepared by smoking a tender banana leaf a little bit then chicken, beef, g. nuts or goats meat is put inside the banana leaf and tied well. This is then put on top of well covered food to get ready, it is mainly the aroma of  this meal that makes everyone crave for it. This treat goes well with matoke, rice, yams and vegetables like Nakatti, Sukuma wich or  Cabbages

Muchomo

It is becoming another staple food in the country.  Muchomo is roasted small pieces of meat pierced in a stick however this is the most common way it is presented especially on the roadsides in every town. It is as well found in the high ending restaurants always served with fries with fresh salads.this cuisine is famous for its crispy flavor which never leaves you the same once you get to test it.

Kikalayi

It is the most delicious pork and if you haven’t tested it, you have not yet had pork in your life. Kikalayi is a big round robbust local frying pan which is used during the preparation of this meal. This treat is usually served on a large round tray with an option of chilli. This is because it is best when shared with collegues. If you really like pork, then kikalayi is what you should not miss out on your trip to uganda.

Matoke

Matoke is a renown traditional staple food for most Ugandans especially the Bantu tribes. In most villages especially the western part of Uganda, there are very many large banana plantations that cover acres of land and this and this matoke is brought to urban centres like Kampala for sale.

For matoke, any sauce can work, it just depends on what you would prefer for it. The meal is always prepared in different ways such as empogola which is matoke cooked with peelings and this is served with pork Muchomo or any grilled meat. The other way matoke is prepared is by peeling off the peelings, cover it in banana leaves and smashing it after it is ready, this is the commonest way of preparing it in the country.

This is a very common delicacy in the country found everywhere in town, it is consumed by very many people. Rolex is fried eggs with tomatoes and onions then rolled in a ready chapati, it is a buyer’s choice to either decide raw tomatoes in it or tomatoes fried in the eggs. Posho

I should say that posho is the commonest inexpensive food in Uganda mostly consumed in schools. it is generally smashed dry maize to form that white powder called posho, this food is cooked using very hot water and mingle until it becomes a solid.

Any sauce can compliment posho but the most loved and favorable is fresh or dry beans.

Roasted maize

It is a snack which you can choose to eat at any time of the day, there is roasted maize and the boiled one. They are both very delicious but it depends on one’s test to pick what they would like most. However, it should be noted that maize is mostly available in the wet season therefore it is not available all the time.

Chapati

It is a famous side dish especially in restaurants, they are normally sliced into small pieces and served with the main dish. A chapati can as well act as an escort to your tea in the morning or evening

Chaloko

This is a traditional food in Uganda made with pinto beans, tomatoes, green papers and red or purple onions. This sauce only goes well with posho to satisfy you all the way until your next meal.

Groundnut sauce (Binyebwa)

They are pounded to be in position of acting as sauce on any food. This sauce becomes more delicious when [dry fish is cooked with it and can go on any food though very nice on matoke.

You should not miss out this rare delicacy in Uganda. They are fried grasshoppers sold every where like roadsides, pubs and other eateries. It should be noted that grasshoppers are only available in the wet season and particularly in November.

TV chicken

TV chicken is the commonest delicious cuisine eaten by college students and every one at large. It is roasted in an oven that looks like a television. They are commonly found on roadsides and restaurants followed by French fries, salads and smoked bananas.

Sim Sim cookies

It is a dessert, cookies cooked with sim sim on top that makes them appetizing and in deed they are very delicious. They are found everywhere for example venders sell them, shops, and bakeries.

Chicken Nat

You must obviously not leave out this meal on your trip to Uganda. chicken Nat is prepared by cutting it into pieces, mix with onions seasoning and peanut butter to make a very delicious meal. Chicken Nat goes well with posho or rice and assuredly, it will leave you fully satisfied.
