All about Kampala City

Also known as the capital city of Uganda, Kampala is the largest town in Uganda situated in the central region of Uganda. Kampala hosts a population of over 1,680,800 population of people in 2019. It is one the top busy town with the most outstanding businesses that include; transportation, trade, numerous headquarters and business offices. It is has been ranked as one of the most growing city in Africa with a diversity of daily activities that take place every day. The city is under the management of a governmental body known as the Kampala Capital city Council Authority that is in charge of regulating all activities operation on behalf of the Government.

The common and main transportation means include taxis and boda boda which acts as options for public transport taking you to different regions of the country. The Pearl of Africa has tarmacked roads that connect to different areas of the country such as; in the west, the north, south and eastern region. You encounter many people that travel to Kampala city with different motives such as; Visiting Friends and families, studies, work among others.

Kampala is town is strategically located close to lake Victoria situated in the southern direction of the park. Kampala is strategically situated on the southern shores of lake Victoria where you meet with impressive activities like Fishing as well as other leisure activities. From Entebbe international Airport, Kampala is located about 45 kilometers by road.

Historical background of Kampala

The Legendary history about Kampala is derived from the ancient regime of Kabaka(King) of Buganda known as Kabaka Mutesa 1 who was the King in that era. The current Kampala was occupied by several hills and many wetlands which were harboring numerous wildlife including the endangered Impala antelopes.  But because Kampala was located with the central region of Buganda Kingdom, Kabaka Mutesa decided to initiate hunting exercise after releasing the coming of the colonial masters and settled in Buganda region and named Kampala and this meant “Hill of Impala” that is translated “Kasozi ka Impala”. This gave birth to current name “Kampala”.

Up to now, Kampala is known as a city of seven hills such as ; Mengo Hill that hosts the Kabaka’s Palace locally named as “Lubiri” , Kampala/ Old Kampala Hill home to the Lugard Ruins, Kibuli Hill home to the oldest Mosque, Kasubi Hills housing the Kasubi tombs where the king and royal family is buried, Namirembe Hill home to Namirembe Anglican Cathedral, Nsambya Hill home to the headquarters of Mill hill Mission and Nsambya hospital, Lubaga hill home to the Catholic Cathedral.

Bahai Temple

The Bahai temple is the only temple in Africa at the same time the biggest temple in the world. The Bahai temple is situated about 4 miles from the Kampala Capital city Centre. Bahai faith manages the temple and anyone is always welcoming to take part in the prayer sessions. The temple accommodates over 600 people and it is situated on  hill thus offering picturesque scenic views to the temple and it is surrounded by Beautiful flowers.

The Uganda Museum

It is one of the cultural heritage site the central Uganda situated in Kamwokya in Kampala district along Kira highway. It possess numerous historical collections such as; Music Instruments, hunting materials, ancient vehicles that were on trend during old regimes of the previous presidents of the Pearl of Africa as well as African tradition hut houses where each is named according the various tribes and cultures of Uganda.

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine is one of the Religious sites that is highly recognized in Uganda due the killing of the ancient Uganda martyrs that were killed by Kabaka-king Mwanga in the year 1880s.  Thus the religious site was constructed to remember the killing of the innocent Uganda martyrs since they had refused to denounce their faith of Christianity.  3rd every year was put in place to honor and celebrate the lives of these heroes in Christianity.

The Uganda national mosque

The mosque is situated on the old Kampala hill and it is the largest among all that are located in Kampala. It carries a capacity of about 25000 people. The mosque was established by President Muammer Gadaffi of Libya that is one of the reasons why it was named after him.  Apparently the Mosque is  called the Gaddafi Mosque and it was constructed as a gift to Uganda. It is highly recognized by the Moslem faith in Uganda. However before you take a visit to the place we advise that you dress up decently as the Muslim culture demands.

Namirembe Cathedral.

Also referred to as St Paul Namirembe Cathedral, it is the most recognized Provincial Cathedral of the church of Uganda.  Besides being the Oldest Cathedral, Namirembe Cathedral is the is the Diocese Cathedral that was founded in Uganda in the Year 1890. When you visit the cathedral, delight in sighting the mesmerizing architecture.

Kabaka’s Lake

This is one of the largest man made lakes in Africa, it was established between 1884 and 1888 by Kabaka Mwanga. Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda Kingdom ordered the construction the lake and he also took part in the in digging with as an exemplary leader. One of the reasons that motivated the King to construct the lake was aim of connecting Lubiri his palace to Lake Victoria.
