6 Days Rwanda–Uganda Primate Safari Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your safari guide and briefed about your 6-day primate adventure. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a short Kigali city tour, visiting highlights such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, and local art galleries.

After lunch, embark on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in Rwanda’s northern province. The drive offers picturesque views of Rwanda’s rolling hills and vibrant rural life. On arrival, check in at your luxury lodge at the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, unwind, and enjoy dinner with spectacular views of the mountains.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Start your morning with an early breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing on golden monkey trekking. These playful primates are an endangered species found only in the Virunga Mountains. Trekking through the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park, you’ll spot these bright, curious monkeys leaping among the trees, feeding, and socializing — a truly delightful experience.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you can opt for a cultural experience at the nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you’ll meet local communities, learn about traditional Rwandan customs, and enjoy cultural music and dance.

Day 3: Cross the Border to Uganda – Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, bid farewell to Rwanda and cross into Uganda via the Chanika Border Post. Enjoy a scenic drive through terraced hills and lush valleys en route to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to nearly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.

Upon arrival, check into your forest lodge nestled within the misty hills and enjoy a peaceful afternoon at leisure, taking in the sights and sounds of the rainforest.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today is the highlight of your safari — mountain gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing before venturing into the forest with experienced rangers. The trek can take between two and six hours depending on the gorilla family’s movement, but every step is an adventure through ancient trees, bird songs, and the thrill of anticipation.

When you finally encounter the gorillas, spend one precious hour watching them as they feed, play, and care for their young. It’s a deeply emotional experience that connects you to nature in the most profound way. Return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation, sharing stories of your once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

Day 5: Transfer to Kibale National Park – The Primate Capital of the World

After breakfast, depart Bwindi and journey northward to Kibale National Park, renowned for its high concentration of primates, including chimpanzees. The drive is long but scenic, passing through rolling hills, tea plantations, and lively rural villages. Upon arrival, check in at your lodge near the forest and enjoy a well-deserved evening of rest and comfort.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest & Departure via Entebbe

Rise early for an exciting morning of chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. After a short briefing at the park headquarters, head into the jungle in search of these intelligent and energetic primates. As you track them, you’ll also spot other forest dwellers such as black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, and an impressive variety of birds.

Once you find the chimpanzees, spend an hour observing their lively interactions — from grooming and feeding to playful chases. Return to your lodge for lunch and later transfer to Kasese Airstrip for your flight to Entebbe. Upon arrival, you will be assisted with your onward international flight, marking the end of your unforgettable Rwanda–Uganda primate safari.
