The Gorilla Trekking Experience

Mountain gorilla trekking can only be done in three countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Uganda. Uganda boasts the largest population of mountain gorillas, with approximately 500 individuals residing in two national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi, often regarded as the ultimate gorilla trekking destination, is home to around 21 habituated gorilla families, while Mgahinga hosts just one.

Gorillas live in family groups led by a mature silverback male, surrounded by female members, juveniles, and infants. Most gorilla families in Uganda have undergone habituation, making them accessible to tourists throughout the year. Let’s take a closer look at the different gorilla families you can encounter during your trek.

Gorilla Families in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

  1. Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
    • The Nyakagezi family is the only habituated group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Comprising about 9 members, including 2 infants, 2 adult females, and 4 silverbacks, this family is led by the silverback Mark, who succeeded his father Bugingo. Nyakagezi offers a unique experience for travelers, showcasing the charm of gorilla trekking in this beautiful park.

Gorilla Families in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is renowned for its diverse gorilla families. The park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, and Ruhija, each home to its unique gorilla families. Here’s an overview of the notable families in Bwindi:
