Gorilla Habituation experience : The process of training mountain gorillas to get used to visits from people is what Gorilla Habituation is all about. It can take about 2 to 3 years to fully habituate the gorillas and during this time researchers will keep visiting the identified mountain gorilla groups to access how far they have gone with the process. Once researchers are fully sure that the gorillas can be visited, they will perform a mock exercise inviting scientists and journalists and once they confirm its okay, the group is opened for trekking. Uganda is home to 19 fully habituated mountain gorilla groups including Mubare, Rushegura, Habinyanja, Bitukura, Orizogo, Kyaguriro, Ruhija, Nshongi, Busingye, Kayungye, and Bweza among others.
There are currently only two mountain gorilla groups open for habituation tour found within Bwindi forest’s Nkuringo & Rushaga regions. A gorilla habituation permit costs US$ 1500 per person and for all the right reasons, you will get to spend 4 hours with the gorillas giving you more time to learn new information from researchers as you observe them feed and interact.
