Majestic Colobus: Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest
I MET THIS MAJESTIC CREATURE IN RWANDA: THE COLOBUS ANGOLENSIS RUWENZORII.
I met Majestic Colobus of Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest. Hidden deep in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest, we came face to fur with a creature that looked like a forest philosopher wrapped in velvet. Meet the Colobus Angolensis Ruwenzorii, also known as the Rwenzori colobus, a primate so stylish it could teach a fashion masterclass in jungle couture.
I made a Rwanda primate tour with Jeisking Tours, where I met this good-looking and amazing creature.
The fact is I didn’t know its name, but due to its attractive black and white colors, I was forced to find out all about it. I enjoyed the Rwenzori colobus facts, which made it the best wildlife experience in East Africa.

First Impressions: COLOBUS ANGOLENSIS RUWENZORII Cloaked in Elegance
This majestic colobus of Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest doesn’t swing through the trees; it glides. You’d think it’s auditioning for an aerial version of Fortnite, its flowing white mantle trailing like a superhero’s cape.
With its black body and shock of white fur, it looks like it’s been dipped in ink and brushed by clouds. OMG, you need to see this by yourself.
When I spotted the Colobus angolensis perched high in the canopy, it stared back like it owned the forest. And honestly? It probably does because it looked me in the eye… like I owed it rent for stepping into its forest.
With its confident swings across the treetops, it moves like the rightful ruler of Nyungwe Forest.
Where to Find Colobus: Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest.
Located in southwestern Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest is a biodiversity hotspot. It’s home to up to
13 primate species, but the Rwenzori colobus steals the show with its charisma and massive social groups, sometimes numbering 500 individuals. Imagine a furry flash mob, bouncing through the treetops.
Once you reach the forest, you will start seeing that you enjoy the trees.

Why the Majestic Colobus Matters
The colobus is more than just a pretty face. It plays a key role in keeping forests healthy by helping with seed dispersal. Protecting it helps preserve Rwanda’s rich ecosystem and supports ecotourism—which directly benefits local communities and the country at large.
