Rwanda Trekking Permits: How to Book Gorilla, Chimpanzee, Golden Monkey & Mountain Trekking Safaris?
Rwanda trekking permit Are you searching for how to book a one? Whether you dream of gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, mountain hiking, or chimpanzee trekking, every traveler is required to have a valid Rwanda trekking permit.
Without this document, participation in trekking adventures is not allowed. Therefore, once you decide to travel to the Land of a Thousand Hills, booking your permit early should be the first step in your safari planning.
Rwanda, located just below the Equator in the western arm of the Great Rift Valley, is a destination of lush volcanic ranges, tropical forests, and unique wildlife.
Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda welcomes travelers with stunning mountain landscapes, mist-covered jungles, and an authentic cultural spirit.
It is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimpanzees, and countless bird species. With trekking permits, you can experience these rare encounters safely and responsibly.
Gorilla Trekking Permit in Rwanda
Gorilla trekking is Rwanda’s most popular safari activity. It is conducted only in Volcanoes National Park, which protects about 12 habituated gorilla families.
To join a trek, you must obtain a gorilla trekking permit from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
The cost of a Rwanda gorilla permit is USD 1,500 per person, granting you one hour with a gorilla family in its natural habitat.
Trekking can last from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Because only eight visitors are allowed per gorilla group per day, permits are extremely competitive especially during the dry seasons, which are peak tourism months.
Booking at least 5 to 6 months in advance is strongly recommended.
Only travelers aged 15 years and above are eligible. The permit fee includes park entry, ranger guidance, and conservation support, with 20% of the funds benefiting local communities.
By booking through Gorilla Uganda Safari Bookings, our team handles the entire process, secures your permit directly from RDB, and customizes your trip with additional activities.
Golden Monkey Trekking Permit
Golden monkey trekking is another thrilling experience in Rwanda, especially for those looking for a shorter and more affordable adventure.
These playful primates live in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park, with two habituated troops open for visitors. One troop, near Mount Sabyinyo, has about 100 individuals and is the most visited.
A golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 per person and includes park entry and ranger guidance.
Unlike gorilla trekking, there are no strict age limits or group restrictions, making it a family-friendly activity.
Trekking usually begins at 7:00 am after a briefing at the park headquarters. With their energetic nature and fast movements, golden monkeys are a delight to photograph.
Chimpanzee Trekking Permit
For chimpanzee lovers, Rwanda offers trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Trekking is carried out in two sections Uwinka and Cyamudongo with treks starting at around 6:00 am.
A chimpanzee trekking permit in Rwanda costs USD 100 per person.
The experience includes one hour of observing a chimpanzee community in its natural habitat. Watching the young chimps play, the mothers nurture, and the dominant males communicate is both educational and unforgettable.
Mountain Trekking Permit
Rwanda’s trekking permits also extend to mountain adventures. Among the highlights is a one-day Mount Bisoke hike in Volcanoes National Park.
This active volcano, straddling the border of Rwanda and DR Congo, features two scenic crater lakes and spectacular bamboo forests.
The trek to the summit takes about six hours, with two hours needed for descent. Along the way, trekkers may spot rare wildlife, including gorillas on the slopes.
The cost of a Mount Bisoke trekking permit is USD 75 per person. Hikers are required to attend a morning briefing at the park headquarters before setting off with ranger guides.
Porters are available for hire at about USD 10 to carry your backpack and make the hike more comfortable.
