The Nile Congo Basin Trail : The Nile Congo basin is a hiking trail which passes via the kivu lake beginning from the northern shores of Rusizi district which is 227 kilometers from the city Kigali. The Congo Nile basin is almost the best hiking trail in Rwanda and east Africa at large. You can experience Rwanda’s natural beauty and breath in the natural air too. This trail is so wonderful, remote feeling and accessible by every traveler.

The Nile Congo basin runs through the beautiful network of local roads up to the shores of lake kivu in Rwanda. This trail grows daily due to increased number of tourists like the accessible infrastructure and beaten track spontaneity thus development.

You can explore the beautiful countryside and the villages leading you to the park, view the shores of the island studded lake whenever you wake up, sleeping on the aftermath of the thunderstorm and also enjoying the leisure time with the local people getting your adventure on the Congo basin trail.

On your way to the trail basin, you can see the coffee plantations, small fishing communities, banana trees and beautiful women putting big bundles of firewood, bananas plus avocados on the head going to the market centers. You can also see the peninsular of the terraced hillsides forming the amorphous coastline of lake kivu plus the infinity islets doting its sparkling waters. This track starts from lake kivu up to the enchanting tea plantations where harvester get the endless wave of the black tea. The trail goes up to where the rivers Nile and Congo separates from hence the name Nile Congo basin trail which is used to enter the Nyungwe forest where you can hear the chimpanzees call and also encounter some of the 13 primate species.

The 1994 genocide destroyed the long Congo Nile trail far away which tarnished Rwanda’s reputation making it the most stable political country, safe and wonderful safari destination in Africa. This is due to the good management of the international funds including the international monthly cleanup day. The government of Rwanda put up significant power to position Rwanda as the main tourism destination and mostly tourism industry has benefited from it.

You can visit all of this trail by means of a car, bike, motorcycle or walking. Walking and biking are tiresome but are the better ways of seeing the 13 primates and completing the visit of the trail. You can watch the wonderful scenery of the trail and also interact with the local people freely.in the 10 days of walking in the trail you can be doing a very good exercise especially when you are many if you have connected with other travelers but biking takes only 5 days.
