My Visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: Walking With Uganda’s Rhinos

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was the place to go when I planned my first trip to Uganda. I knew gorilla trekking and other safaris like whitewater rafting and boat cruises would be on my list. Entrance fees for foreigners were around $50 when I visited, which felt worth every dollar. In addition, guided walks usually last 1 to 2 hours, and they are suitable for most fitness levels.

The Best Time to Visit A Rhino Sanctuary?

Since Uganda has two dry seasons, Here are the best seasons: from December to February and from June to September, I found that these months are the best for rhino tracking. During this time, the trails are less muddy, and spotting wildlife becomes easier. Nevertheless, the sanctuary is open year-round, so even in the rainy season, you can enjoy the experience with just a bit more adventure.

While walking through the bush, I realized that my visit was more than a tourist activity. In fact, the sanctuary plays a key role in breeding rhinos for eventual release into Uganda’s national parks. Consequently, every visitor contributes to protecting these endangered giants.
