Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors : Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is made up of four wonderful gorilla trekking sectors that offer a unique experience each. They are situated in different parts of the park such as Buhoma in the North, Ruhija in the eastern, Rushaga in the southern and Nkuringo still in the southern part. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park itself is located in the south western of Uganda and its like over 500 kilometers from Kampala.

Buhoma trekking sector

Buhoma is one of the exciting trekking sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park situated in the north in Kanungu district. Buhoma sector is the travelers first choice if they are to do gorilla trekking. This is why permits for Buhoma are difficult to get if at all you did not book in advance. Therefore, you are advised to do your booking 6 months prior to the day of your traveling.

Buhoma trekking sector is more exclusive than others which makes it the most preferred sector for gorilla trekkers. Strategically, the sector is accessible from kabala and kihihi airstrip hence making it so favorable and encouraging to visit. The history about Buhoma goes way back in 1992 when Bwindi Impenetrable forest was gazette to a national park and the first gorilla family to be habituated was the Mubare in the same year. Tourism was first carried out in Buhoma sector. More interestingly, Buhoma sector is near Queen Elizabeth National Park and a traveler coming from the park gets an opportunity to view the tree climbing lions in the Ishasha sector to Buhoma trekking sector.

Gorilla families in Buhoma trekking sector

The sector hosts three gorilla families that are already habituated such as Habinyanja, Mubare and Rushegura family. Every gorilla family in Buhoma sector has an interesting story about it. Mubare family was the first gorilla group to be habituated in 1992, it has only nine members and it’s the oldest. Rushegura family was opened in 2000 with 19 members and Habinyanja in 1997 consisting of 17 members.

Ruhija sector

Ruhija sector is another fascinating trekking sector of the park located in east on an elevation of 2,350 meters above the sea level. Ruhija trekking sector is the coldest part of Bwindi forest National Park and it gives exclusive and adventurous hiking trail to Rwamunyonyi peak which you should engage in. interestingly, you encounter other primates in Ruhija trekking sector including; monkeys, elephants among others. Gorilla families in Ruhija are; Kyaguiro, Bitukura and Oruogo family.

Gorilla permits

In Ruhija trekking sector, only 24 permits are available for trekking and strictly eight people are allowed to trek the mountain gorillas.

For nonresidents, a gorilla permit is $500, non-foreign residents it is $ 600 and east African residents a permit is UGX250,000. The trekking estimated time goes from 30 minutes to 6 hours therefore a traveler is requested to pack lunch to be on a safe side if incase it goes up to 6 hours. It is important to know that the gorillas keep on moving from place to place but there’s no need to worry because chances of finding the mountain gorillas is 99%. Due to the tough terrain of the park, one needs to be in proper health and physically fit for a wonderful hike.

Visiting and supporting the society projects

There are several things a traveler can choose to do in Ruhija sector and among them is supporting the society projects (volunteering). Many different projects are owned by natives in this community like bee keeping, making baskets, cattle raring, the art and craft industry among others. These projects help much in the development of the community financially therefore it is up to the traveler upon which project o support.

Birding in Ruhija trekking sector is one of the breath-taking activities a traveler can do. The sector features about 23 colorful bird species for example; Dusky crimson, horn bills, yellow streaked greenbul, yellow eyed black flycatcher, grey bush shrike to mention but a few. As you trek through the forest, enjoy the soothing singing of birds, Ruhija trekking sector is popular for conserving birdlife. While packing, do not forget the binoculars for clear viewing of birds, on your journey the ranger guides explain to you the uniqueness of every bird you get to see. Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector

The area is among the great four trekking sectors I n Bwindi forest located in the southern part. As the name is, the group in this sector is called Nkuringo gorilla family. Each member of this precious family is wonderful, it is led by Rafiki liked by most travelers

The wonderful Nkuringo gorilla family is comprised of 19 members joined by Bushaho gorilla family that sometimes comes from Rushaga sector. The sector is on a higher altitude therefore you need to be physically fit to trek through.

Rushaga sector

Rushaga sector is a unique one due to availability of the availability of trekking g permits in plenty compared to other sectors. Enjoy trekking as you meet gorilla families here and you can as well do gorilla habituation and given four hours to spend with the gorillas unlike trekking experience where its only one hour
